In the Garden: this season's hot new plants

If you haven't taken a tour a of a greenhouse yet this season, now is the time. Local nurseries are full of vibrant colors and new varieties of plants. We caught up with Heidi Heiland of Heidi's Lifestyle Gardens to show us what things are taking off this year.

1. Herbs
"Herbs are hot this year," Heiland said. "People are adding basil and other herbs to their flower beds to really diversify their gardens or containers."

2. What's old is new again
Hybrids of impatiens (pictured above) and salvias are gaining popularity. "Trailing impatiens are going to be a new trend this season because this kind will spread and fill up your space a bit more than the old traditional kind."

3. Tropical
For the past few years we've seen huge vibrant flowers for sale that look like they belong in a tropical paradise not Minnesota, but they can be grown here for awhile.  Pictured above is Monrovia's hibiscus. "There are quite a few different tropicals that are really eye catching this year," Heiland said.  "They really add a lot of vibrant color to any area."

To check out more hot items, Heiland is hosting a planter party May 27 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the nursery, 7241 County Road 116. You can find directions and more details at Heidi's Lifestyle Gardens
