Hopkins set for football opener against Texas team
Teams in the five-team Lake Conference always have a lot of trouble scheduling games in football.
The Hopkins Royals are taking advantage of the new "zero week", starting practice and games one week before the usual date.
Hopkins has an interesting opponent for its opener at home Saturday: Private school power Episcopal of Bellaire, Texas, a suburb of Houston.
Though Hopkins is a much larger school than Episcopal, the visitors will bring plenty of speed and talent.
And both coaches admit there is a little state pride on the line, too.
Hopkins is coming off a 3-6 season last fall, and returns five starters on each side of the ball.
They're often overshadowed by neighboring powers Wayzata, Eden Prairie, and even Minnetonka, but Hopkins is no pushover.
They aim to prove it Saturday.
