"Cupcake Wars" reigning champ opens shop in Maple Grove

Every once in a while a new business opens its doors to a little more fanfare than usual. Nadia Cakes of Maple Grove is that kind of business.

Fresh off a win on the Food Network's "Cupcake Wars" program, Nadia Cakes owner Abby Jimenez decided to expand its Los Angeles area cupcake and custom cake business by opening a second store in a location that would be business and family friendly. Jimenez and her husband's 23 state tour to find such a spot ended in Maple Grove.

"No question this was the place we wanted to be, we love the community and we saw that there was definitely a demand and a need," said Jimenez.

Since its "soft" opening July 8 in Maple Grove, Nadia Cakes has sold 20,000 cupcakes and had lines of people waiting outside its doors to try the rotating schedule of 135 different cupcake flavors.

"It has been just staggering the amount of response," said Jimenez. "We are blowing through what we do in a month in our other shop, we're doing this in a couple days here."

Customer Victor Vue stopped by the new business last week on the recommendation of a friend. A day later he was back for more.

"I came and tried one, and I just kind of fell in love with it," said Vue.

Nadia Cakes officially opens with regular store hours on July 26.
