Making money at consignment stores

Saving money while shopping has become a trendy thing to do in a down economy. While many retail clothing shops are reporting lower sales figures, consignment stores are doing very well.

That's the story at Turnstyle Consignment Store in Plymouth. The store has already expanded once and is thinking about expanding again.

"We suggest if you do see it, and you love it, you should buy it because it won't be here," advises manager Missy Serier, who keeps an eye on trends so the store stays current and keeps merchandise moving.

"Like these cardigan shawls," said Serier. "They are super hot this year."

How it works

When people tighten their budget belt, they often look to sell not only their actual belt, but their clothes and shoes to make some extra cash. At consignment stores, you bring in the merchandise and the store sells it. You get to pocket a portion of the sale.

"People pick up checks weekly, every couple of weeks, or once a month. It's really up to them," said Serier. "Obviously the more items you bring in, the faster your account will grow."

At Turnstyle, you must bring in the item to be approved before it goes on the sales floor. Sales associates review the item to make sure it's clean, repaired and current.

"They need to be in sellable condition. The clothes need to be ready to sell right off the sales floor--so no wrinkles, the buttons are attached, and the zippers are working," said Serier.

While shoes and denim jeans are generally the best sellers, Serier says make sure any items you bring in are in style. She says they don't have to be all designer duds, although designer labels do sell well.

"Just make sure they are things you've purchased in the last two to three years," she said, "and they are in good condition."

If a garment is accepted, it will go on the sales floor for 90 days. After 60 days, it is discounted by 50 percent. If it still doesn't sell, the item will be donated to charity.

Two items that generally don't sell well are men's suits and formal wear, unless it's a versatile black cocktail dress. Consignment stores change with the season, so the busy times are spring and fall when wardrobes are changing.

"Many people are thinking more of cleaning out closets, getting ready for spring and summer, so that's a really busy season," said Missy. "If you are very fashion-forward person and you like to change out your wardrobe very quickly, consigning is awesome for that."
